The Lagos State Government has ordered motorists and commercial bus drivers in the state to stop driving on bridges.
Consequently, the government has given a seven-day ultimatum in what it tagged ‘Vacation Order’, stressing that it takes effect from Monday, October 16, 2023.
This was contained in a press release issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA’s) Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq on Monday.
According to the statement, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa said that the 7-day day ‘Vacation Order’ is a prerequisite to eliminate every form of infringement that deter free flow of traffic on bridges across the state.
“Despite several warnings, motorists/commercial bus drivers have continued to defy government order and causing serious obstructions around these bridges with great negative impacts on the integrity of the bridges and traffic.
“The present administration is expending huge resources for constructing standard bus terminals/garages for commercial activities in every part of the State,” Hon. Giwa disclosed.
He added: “Every motorist/commercial bus driver operating along ‘Apongbon’ and ‘Idumota’ (Cater)Bridges, ‘Elegbata:, ‘Ebute-Ero’ and ‘Ejalonibu’ must as a matter of urgency vacate these areas as @followlastma would commence strict enforcement operation immediately after the expiration of this ultimatum until zero tolerance is achieved across the state.”
Hon. Giwa further stated that the activities of these motorists/commercial bus drivers on bridges are contrary to provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law 2018 as amended.
Similarly, the Special Adviser maintained that after the expiration of the ultimatum, vehicles contravened would be immediately charged to the Lagos State Mobile Court for prosecutions.
